How would these usage poses be perceived differently if these two men were not standing in front of Pantip Plaza, the foremost technology (and other bits and bobs, such as binoculars) mall in Bangkok? Context makes the difference between them being conspicuous voyeurs and careful consumers, field testing their wares before purchasing (perhaps later only to be more subtle voyeurs?). Have those in surrounding apartments become savvy to the testing (before selling) of binoculars? How much longer will binoculars even be around, as the cameras in our phones become more and more advanced and zoom-lengths reach ever further? Perhaps in a few years time the queue outside Pantip will include those squinting into displays of phones held at arm’s length alongside binocular testers.
