Apartment buzzer user interfaces are like a lot of other designed things: a “successful” one is uninteresting in that it is comparable to all other successful ones, but an unsuccessful one is truly fascinating in that it fails in a completely distinct and individual way – a unique thumbprint of failure, if you will. As a corollary, there is much to be learned from the corrections and workarounds of the users who must deal with that failure daily. By observing such improvised solutions, we can gather ideas that will possibly lead to future successes (or at least less severe failures). Now if only those successes weren’t so…boring.
